In our home, Mom studied the dictionary, making a list of words and their meanings, that sounded the same when spoken, but had different spellings and meanings. She went through various steps to aid us in winning spelling tests.

List of similar words, with meanings.
List of words that were not spelled as they sounded, such as "ph" for "f".
List of double letter words, such as "pittance" and "bookkeeping".
List of words ending in "ence", "ance", "ent", "ant", and similar endings.
Learned how to properly pronounce and state word in a spelling test manner.

Mom not only helped us win numerous spelling tests, but we write, speak, and read with ease. An added plus was that Mom furthered her own education and vocabulary.

Dad would pick words out of a magazine or his evening newspaper and expect us to spell it in the proper manner. If we were wrong, he would say, "That's not what it says here." Then we were told to go look it up in the big dictionary. That's how we learned about different spellings, such as UK English and US English.

(my source for the second point was: http://www.helium.com/tm/344988/preparing-spelling-tricky-times )please go there for more info !

Careless Mistakes

Teachers are almost always going on about careless mistakes. You and your children engage in nightly battles over when homework will be done.
2. Your children rush through homework assignments, with sloppy, incomplete results.
3. Your children "forget" to bring their homework assignments home.
4. You do more of the homework than your children do.
5. Your children take forever to finish their homework assignments.
6. Your children insist that they are able to do homework while watching TV, talking on the phone, and listening to the stereo.
7. The first time you hear about a major project is the night before it is due ... and it is not finished.
If you answered YES to one or more of these questions, you need to do the following things:
1. Set up a proper study area in your home. Equip this study area with a HOMEWORK SURVIVAL KIT. Here are some essential items: pencils, pens, erasers, markers, notebook paper, tape, hole punch, scissors, glue or paste, stapler, ruler, protractor, compass, index cards, paper clips, dictionary, folders, calculator.

2. Establish a DAILY HOMEWORK TIME. Children cannot regard homework as something to be done after all other activities are finished. This mandated homework time will help you deal with SPEEDERS, who race through the work with little or no effort, and FORGETTERS, who fail to bring the work home.

3. Take steps to encourage your children to do their homework independently. Check to see that your child is doing homework at the proper time. Suggest that your child call a "study buddy" if he/she needs help. Give your child help only after he makes an effort on his own. CAUTION: Do not do the work for your children. Use your child's AGENDA BOOK to help plan the steps necessary to completing long range projects.

4. Consistently praise your child's efforts. Tell your child specifically what you like about what he is doing or what he has done.

5. Use additional incentives if necessary. The minimum time required to earn a reward varies with the age of the child.
For children in grades 4 - 6, one to two weeks is recommended, and for children in grades 7 - 12, two to four weeks is recommended. Specify the number of points that must be earned to receive the reward and specify the reward.

6. Communicate so your children really listen. Do not argue, beg, or threaten. Look your child in the eye and say. "In this home, your number one responsibility is to do your homework. There will be no more arguments about it. You will do your homework during the DAILY HOMEWORK TIME, and you will do it to the best of your ability."

7. Take a firm stand. When told that he cannot have any privileges until he finishes his homework, a child may be upset. Experience may have taught him that this tactic will make his parents back down. No matter how irate your child becomes, stand your ground CALMLY and follow through by insisting on your expectations.

8. Contact your child's teacher if you continue to have homework problems. The teacher is your partner in the homework process. Both you and the teacher can communicate through short notes in your child's AGENDA BOOK.

9. Work with your child on STUDY SKILLS. The AGENDA BOOK has a good section on study skills. If your child has a report to write, break it into the following steps: A. pick an appropriate topic B. do fact finding research C. determine questions you want to answer about the topic D. take notes about the topic E. write an outline of the report F. make a rough draft of the report; check for accuracy and make corrections as needed G. write the final draft of the report.

How can.you help your children learn how to study for tests?

1. Determine what the test will cover.
2. Organize all study materials.
3. Schedule time for studying.
4. Use effective study techniques.
a. write important information on index cards.
b, review homework and class notes.
c. review study questions, past quizzes and tests.
d. review highlighted portions of the textbook.
e. make a list of sample test questions.
5. If the test comes directly from a the class textbook, follow
these steps:
a. survey the chapter.
b. make a note of headings of each main section.
c. read the summary at the end of the chapter.
d. read through the study questions at the end of the chapter.

NEW !

u would see a new somthing NEW in the blog today!me and kitty did it together!\

Jem

Parts of Homework

Do we really hate HOMEWORK? Or just a part of it. Like.....filing or worksheets or online homework. I mean, I personally hate filing but, do I hate online homework? Not really. Based on what I know, there are MAJOR up and down sides to these things. I will make a list

1) Worksheets
Good: Easy to do, Easy to keep in your bag
Bad: Gets lost easily, Corrections,

2) Filing
Good: No corrections
Bad: Alot of worksheets to file, can be VERY messy

3) Online homework
Good: Gives you an excuse to go on the internet, You can take as long as you want
Bad: You might get distracted and not do your work properly, Might get confused

4) Bring-home Tests
Good: You can ask your parents for a LITTLE help, More relaxed than a School Test
Bad: Tempted to do a little longer than time limit, Parents nagging you ESPECIALLY hard to do it

If you can think of any more homeworkm, then tag. Back to the point, we need to think about WHAT homework we hate and WHY. I mean, we can hardly go around saying "I hate Online Homework because it doesn't have the letter C in it". What we can say is "I hate filing because it is very messy and takes alot of time". I am not telling you to be jugdemental either. Just, give a good reason WHY you hate homework or whatever. Because if you do tell people a BAD reason, then you might give someone a good thing to blackmail you about. Or so we think.

I bet most kids are going on and on about how much homework is a drag. Some people don't understand it's a phase but, it will make a lasting impression on those who actually get it. HOH comforts those who are in desperate need of some advice and help defend homework at the same time. I mean how are kids supposed to cope with some much homework at the age of NINE! Ok fine! SIX to maybe when you graduate college. For the lucky few who are spared (which used to be me before I moved to where I am now) they still work hard at school and so on. For those who are as unlucky as me, we have to work extra- hard 24/7. We always think that we do enough work at school and that we do not desrve this. But we really have to think about others. Like our parents and teachers. I will do a post on this topic too by the way. Plus, homework just boots our chances of getting better grades. We always want good grades don't we. Well, if we don't have homework then we might forget the thing that will cost us full marks! Homework is a major drag. I mean even I don't like it and I used to be a goody two shoes. Still, if we don't have homework we might not have the future we want or planned and then what come's next? Probably much worse than a few bad grades, a week without TV and a two week grounding. So bad I don't even want to think about it. So, do me a favor and think about homework for a while and tag your thoughts. Sorry if this is soooooooo boring and you are falling asleep in you chair thinking, PLEASE let it stop! Well I am glad to tell you it has. I just want you to know, homework isn't all bad. Plus, this HOH is just for fun and unfortunetly boring sometimes. Oh well.
Think wisely about homework and try to DO yours the remaining weekend,
President Kitty

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://hatersofhomework.blogspot.com/2007/07/homework-age-old-torture-device-or-so.html' title='Homework: An age old torture device.
